Our team designs and builds specialized systems for Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Friction Extrusion (FE), and Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) — technologies used to solve challenging manufacturing problems and advance what’s possible in manufacturing.
Bond equipment and engineering have supported projects involving NASA, nuclear storage, national defense and government programs, advanced research, and manufacturers across aerospace, automotive, energy, and other industries. From massive, one-of-a-kind welding systems to emerging manufacturing technologies, our work gives engineers the opportunity to solve complex problems — and see those solutions become real machines.
And we do it from Elkhart, Indiana.
If you’re looking for a career where engineering moves beyond the screen and into machines you can see, test, improve, and ultimately watch go to work, Bond is worth getting to know.
Bond has designed and built custom Friction Stir Welding equipment supporting NASA programs, including specialized systems engineered for the scale, precision, and complexity of aerospace manufacturing.
Most recently, Bond is building a large-scale, gantry-style Friction Stir Welding system based on its Agilis platform (GG7) that will become NASA’s Multipurpose Weld Tool (MWT). Once complete, the system will be delivered and installed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, to support future space exploration. The Agilis platform is the largest and most advanced gantry-style FSW machine ever developed by Bond.
Bond designed, manufactured, and installed the CW-15 Canister Welder for Posiva Oy in Finland as part of the world’s first permanent geological repository for spent nuclear fuel.
The specialized Friction Stir Welding system is designed to seal two-inch-thick copper canisters containing spent nuclear fuel before they are placed approximately 420 meters underground for long-term storage. The CW-15 was engineered to produce the leak-proof welds required to safely contain the material for a planned storage period of up to 100,000 years.
The project demonstrates the kind of highly specialized engineering challenges Bond takes on, combining custom machine design, Friction Stir Welding technology, precision, and long-term reliability in an application where performance is critical.
Work on more than concepts and calculations.
Bond engineers have opportunities to see projects move from design and development through assembly, programming, testing, installation, and operation.
You can see the machine being built. You can watch it run. And you can see the results of the engineering decisions that went into it.

At Bond, different engineering disciplines come together around some very interesting problems.
No two Bond projects are exactly alike.
Depending on your role, you could help design a custom Friction Stir Welding machine, develop controls for a complex multi-axis system, support emerging Friction Extrusion applications, solve a new materials or process challenge, work with robotics and automation, or help turn a customer’s manufacturing concept into production-ready equipment.
