Can We Use the Same Friction Stir Welding Tool to Weld Different Materials?

Home Faq Can We Use the Same Friction Stir Welding Tool to Weld Different Materials?

No, you cannot use the same friction stir welding (FSW) tool to weld all different materials. The FSW tool must be specifically designed for the materials being joined because different materials require different tool geometries and parameters. While tools can often be used to weld multiple alloys of the same material, a FSW tool designed for aluminum won’t create a quality weld in copper or steel, as factors like heat resistance and deformation properties differ between materials like aluminum and copper, for instance.
