What is a hermetic seal weld, and why is it important?

A hermetic seal weld is a type of weld that creates a completely airtight and moisture-tight barrier between two components, preventing the passage of gases, liquids, or contaminants. These seals are essential in industries such as aerospace, defense, medical devices, electronics, and cryogenic storage, where even microscopic leaks can compromise performance, safety, or product lifespan.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a highly effective process for producing hermetic seal welds, especially in aluminum and other non-ferrous materials. Because FSW does not melt the material, it eliminates common fusion weld defects like porosity and cracking—both of which can lead to leaks. The resulting weld is dense, consistent, and structurally sound, making it ideal for applications that require high-integrity, leak-tight joints. FSW is often used in sealed enclosures, fuel tanks, and cryogenic vessels where reliability is critical
