Nuclear Waste Disposal & Storage Industry

Advancing Permanent Solutions for Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) presents a transformative approach in the field of nuclear waste disposal and storage, offering a robust and environmentally safe method for sealing nuclear waste containers. This technique ensures the integrity of storage units by creating high-quality, defect-free welds that significantly enhance the containment’s longevity and safety. FSW’s application in this domain underscores the technology’s critical role in advancing sustainable and secure nuclear waste management practices.

Bond Technologies secured a multi-million-dollar contract with Posiva Oy to support the world’s first final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel, located in Finland.

Leading the Way in Secure Nuclear Waste Management

As industry frontrunners, Bond Technologies spearheads the development and implementation of permanent storage solutions for spent nuclear fuel. Bond has designed, built and installed a system to secure the lid on containers that are the world’s first permanent storage solution for spent nuclear fuel. Working closely with experts in a variety of disciplines, Bond helped implement a robust, reliable and safe solution.

Tailored Solutions for Nuclear Waste Disposal & Storage

Understanding the diverse needs of the nuclear waste industry, Bond offers a range of specialized machines designed to address specific disposal and storage challenges.

Developed to meet the needs of heavy industry, the HWT4 was designed for welding large heat exchangers for industrial applications. With a gimbal head capable of welding with 5-axis motion, the HWT4 is capable of welding a variety of complex geometries. To maximize the use of this range of motion, the machine has a work envelope of 1.5m x 4m x 12m enabling it to handle very large parts. The HWT4 represents Bond’s commitment to meeting the needs of its customers, no matter how large, heavy, or complex their parts are.
Bond Technologies, Friction Extrusion Welding FE Machine, the FE50 ShAPEshifter, a Custom Friction Extrusion Machine designed and built by Bond Technologies, a global leader in friction stir welding tech technologies, for a national lab that is advancing materials research. Built on Bond’s FE platform, the system was engineered for exceptional flexibility, precision, and process control. Its pivoting frame allows the entire machine to operate in either horizontal or vertical orientation, while two rotational and two translational axes provide multiple tooling and processing configurations. The machine supports both direct and indirect extrusion and can rotate the billet and ram while keeping the die stationary—a critical capability when working with long, fragile extrusions. A servo-driven system provides smooth, precise motion at exceptionally slow extrusion speeds. Purpose-built to advance research involving brittle bismuth telluride and other challenging materials, this custom Friction Extrusion machine demonstrates the versatility of Bond’s FE technology and its ability to be highly customized for specialized research and manufacturing applications.

Innovation for Specialized Applications

Recognizing the global need for effective nuclear waste containment, Bond Technologies leverages its expertise to design and build Custom Special Purpose Friction Stir Welding (FSW) machines. These machines provide a reliable and environmentally safe solution for sealing nuclear waste containers, producing defect-free welds that enhance the durability and safety of storage systems. Our approach addresses the challenges of long-term containment, contributing to more sustainable and secure nuclear waste management practices.

Bond Technologies and Posiva The CW-15 Canister Welder is a groundbreaking solution in nuclear waste management. Designed, manufactured, and installed by Bond Technologies, it’s the world’s first welding machine capable of safely sealing nuclear fuel canisters for long-term storage. This machine is part of the world’s first permanent geological repository for nuclear waste, located in Finland, where nuclear fuel rods are sealed in two-inch thick copper canisters and buried 420 meters underground. Using Friction Stir Welding (FSW), the CW-15 provides a leak-proof seal that ensures the safe containment of nuclear materials for up to 100,000 years. The CW-15 Canister Welder represents a major milestone in both environmental protection and advanced manufacturing.
