The Formative Years: Early Innovations and Growth

The journey of Bond Technologies began with the founding of Transformation Technologies, Inc. (TTI) by Bond’s CEO, Tim Haynie, in 1999. TTI started as an engineering service company with a strong focus on aerospace tooling. One of the first significant projects undertaken by TTI was the design of work-holding fixtures for the Eclipse 500 airplane, the first aircraft constructed using Friction Stir Welding. This project set the stage for TTI’s growth and innovation in FSW technology.

Between 2003 and 2008, TTI developed a comprehensive line of FSW machines, rapidly becoming a leading supplier of FSW equipment with customers on four continents.

“It’s remarkable to look back and realize that much of the Bond team has been working together for almost as long as the technology of Friction Stir Welding has existed,” said Dave Hofferbert, President of Bond Technologies. “While the company itself wasn’t officially launched until 2014, most of us have been together for 20 years or longer.”

Acquisition by Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (MTI)

In 2008, Manufacturing Technology, Inc. (MTI), a world leader in Rotary Friction Welding machines, acquired TTI. This merger combined TTI’s innovative FSW technology with MTI’s extensive experience and global reach in friction welding solutions. The integration of TTI into MTI brought together the best of both worlds, setting the stage for unparalleled innovation in friction welding technologies.

The Birth of Bond Technologies: Establishing a New Legacy

In 2014, MTI divested the FSW technology, paving the way for the original TTI technology leaders to establish Bond Technologies. Bond Technologies was born out of a desire to continue the legacy of TTI while integrating the technological advancements and sophisticated control features developed during its time with MTI.

“Because we were part of it all, combining the robust, cost-effective design philosophies of TTI with the technology enhancements developed at MTI was a natural progression for us,” explained Bond Technologies CEO Tim Haynie.

“Since then, it’s been a combination of serving the Research & Development community and production community with Friction Stir Welding machines, said Hofferbert. “There’s not a lot of companies that do what we do – and so we quickly became a global provider of Friction Stir Welder technology.”
